"Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid." - Matthew 5 vs 14 {KJV}

  • A city set on an hill

Pay attention to the above highlighted words, "A city set on an hill". That statement is the description of the Believer. Our identity as Followers of Jesus Christ ought not to be hid from the notice of men—that's the point the Lord was making in the above verse! A Believer's identity in the public should not be unnoticed. Meaning, at one glance, men ought to accurately tell that this is a Christian, this is a follower of Jesus Christ.

How do you carry the consciousness of your identity in Christ at all times irrespective of the gathering of men you find yourself?

It's easy. The Lord shows us how:

"Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." - Mark 8 vs 38 {KJV}

By a careful observation of the above words, we will get the answer to our question. To be ashamed of someone means not to identify with the person publicly, or not to carry the person's identity on yourself publicly! That implies that, not being ashamed of someone means identifying with someone publicly, carrying the person's identity on yourself in public. Right? Yea. So how to carry the consciousness of your identity in Christ is to always publicly declare your identification with Christ. For example: You meet someone for the first time and you are to introduce yourself, you go: "Hello, I am Jenning Uweye by name, and I am a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ." You see that?? The moment you publicly declare your identification with Christ, that open declaration saddles upon you a compulsory consciousness of your Salvation, such that you can not behave inappropriately in the presence of men—you are constantly conscious that you are Born Again. This consciousness will guide your conducts amongst men: your behaviour; your deeds; your speech; your talk; your composure. You are literally guided by this consciousness, because you know that men are watching you, because you openly declared your identity with Christ. - Think about this.

If you are a pastor: As a pastor, seeing that you interact with people, one way to establish great consciousness of your Kingdom identity before men without having your character come into question in the lips of unbelievers, is to introduce yourself as a pastor when you meet people. Don't hide it! So you come into a new office where you meet new people, colleagues... This is how to introduce yourself: "Hello, Good morning! I am Pastor Jenning Uweye, the new worker here." Did you see that? That's how you do it. Why? That public declaration of your pastoral identity in Christ will keep you in check amongst your colleagues, and cause you to be ever conscious of who you are as you interact with them or deal amongst them. This is wisdom!

Dearly beloved, openly declaring your salvation and identification with Christ is the way to do it—that public declaration will keep you conscious of your Divine heritage all day long, and that therefore makes it easy to shine the Light of Christ amongst men, even as the Lord Jesus instructed:

"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." - Matthew 5 vs 16 {KJV}

Remember, the instruction is to shine before men! Before men! Public declaration of your Christian faith brings upon you an active consciousness of your Christian faith, and that consciousness of your Christian faith causes you to walk in your Christian faith before men! You see... It all began with you openly declaring that you belong to Jesus Christ. Hallelujah!!

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.
